Jennifer quickly grabbed her phone and answered, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Jeanne?" she asked anxiously, "Are you okay? Did something happen?"
The voice that came over the phone was an unfamiliar one.
"Ms. Gaynor, Im sorry to inform you that your sister passed away this afternoon."
"What?" Jennifer screamed hysterically into the phone, "No, no, no! Jeanne was fine when I last saw her. Youre lying to me!"
Hearing her outcry, the man stopped in his tracks. He turned back in surprise, gazing at her trembling back.
"Something big must have happened." he thought to himself.
He quickly made his way to Jennifer. She was in a pitiable state, blood trickling down her mouth from biting her lips too hard.
She looks too pitiful. The man frowned.
"Ill be right there!"
Jennifer was struggling to get dressed and stand up, but the pain coming from her body was too much for her to bear and she fell.
"Calm down and tell me whats happening."
"Hospital... my sister... she..."
Jennifer stammered through her tears, completely lost.
Jeanne died. She had nothing left in this world. Jeanne died. She needed to find Jeanne!
The thought prompted Jennifer to her feet and she make her way to the door with faltering footsteps.
The man held her back.
"Let me give you a ride."
On the way to the hospital, tears kept slipping down Jennifers face. She prayed that it was nothing but a terrible nightmare and that Jeanne was still alive.
The man driving the car was silent the entire time.
As they pulled up to the hospital, Jennifer leapt out of the car and ran towards the building.
Looking at her flying back, the mans fingers gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white. With a frustrated sigh, he removed his mask, revealing a strikingly handsome face marred by a furrowed brow.
Upon reaching the ward, Jennifer found that the nurse had already covered Jeannes body with a white sheet.
"Jeanne! Jeanne! Its me, Jennifer! Talk to me, Jeanne."
Jennifer threw herself onto her sisters lifeless form and pleaded for her to respond.
"Im sorry for your loss," the nurse tried to comfort Jennifer.
"No! She is only fifteen! She had a whole bright future waiting for her! She couldnt be dead! You all lied to me!"
Jennifer cried out at the top of her lungs.
With trembling hands, Jennifer lifted the white cover and saw Jeannes gray face and blue lips. At that moment, Jennifer knew it wasnt a dream.
